Austin summers are known for their blazing heat and long sunny days — perfect weather for pool time! But while you’re enjoying a refreshing swim, your pool is working overtime to stay clean, safe, and balanced. High temperatures, strong UV rays, and increased usage can all take a toll on your pool. Here’s how to keep your pool in top shape during Austin’s hottest months.
1. Stay on Top of Water Chemistry
Hot weather can rapidly affect your pool’s chemical balance. Chlorine burns off faster under the Texas sun, and more swimmers mean more contaminants. Test your pool water at least twice a week during summer. Make sure your chlorine levels stay between 1.0 and 3.0 ppm, and keep your pH balanced between 7.2 and 7.8. Consider using a pool stabilizer (cyanuric acid) to help chlorine last longer.
2. Run the Pool Pump Longer
To combat algae growth and maintain clear water, run your pool pump longer in the summer — usually 8 to 12 hours a day. This increases water circulation and helps filter out debris and bacteria. Make sure to clean your filter regularly so it doesn’t get clogged and reduce flow efficiency.
3. Brush and Vacuum Weekly
Algae love heat, and without regular brushing and vacuuming, your pool surfaces can become a breeding ground. Brush the walls, steps, and floor at least once a week, especially in shaded or low-circulation areas. Use a pool vacuum or robotic cleaner to remove debris and keep your pool looking its best.
4. Maintain Water Levels
High temperatures mean more evaporation, especially in Austin’s dry summer air. Keep an eye on your pool’s water level and top it off as needed to avoid stressing the pump or skimmer. Aim to keep the water level at about halfway up the skimmer opening.
